'After four full-length studio albums encompassing eight years and a shift from a dark Folk Metal style to a more acoustic-based sound, Empyrium have been given the 'best of' treatment with "A Retrospective", a collection aimed at looking back at all four of the band's releases, along with two unreleased bonus tracks. However, in a dissimilar fashion to many shameless record labels, Prophecy Productions seem to have pulled out all the stops to make this collection a worthwhile addition to any music collection. They have remastered the material for the compilation and released it in an extravagant gold-embossed case, essentially putting so many of these types of collections to shame from the onset.
However, fancy packaging and improved sound quality aside, the music itself contained on "A Retrospective" is of utter quality through and through. Working through Empyrium's material in a chronological order, long time fans of the band are able to track their musical and ideological progress as they developed as a musical entity, whilst newcomers get a sense of this development and a clear taste for each different era of the band's relatively short lifespan. The first four tracks are taken from "A Wintersunset" and "Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields", the band's first two albums. Evidently, the band's sound was not quite perfected at this stage, but it can hardly be described as basic or amateur-sounding, with opener "The Franconian Woods In Winter's Silence" easing the listener in perfectly to a blend of Progressive Folk and Metal.
The tracks from the album "Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays" are real stand outs though, with no Metal elements at all. Instead, largely instrumental songs like "Dying Brokenhearted" and "The Shepherd And The Maiden Ghost" convey wonderfully melancholic and intense emotions through a wonderful acoustic Folk style, very much reminiscent of Ulver's "Kveldssanger" opus. Beautifully played twin acoustic guitars are accompanied by soft whispers and the occasional hymn-like chant, adding an eerie but still exquisite mood. It's also easy to see why "Weiland", the band's fourth and final album, is considered their masterpiece. The songs from this album stand above the rest simply because the listener can finally hear the perfect balance between the darker themes of the earlier material and the magnificent acoustic style which Empyrium seemed so adept at. Confident that they had perfected their sound, one can hear that they were no longer afraid to experiment with different dynamics, utilising perfect cello passages for example on "Waldpoesie".
If you're a fan of Empyrium, then there really is no reason not to pick up this wonderfully packaged 'best of' collection that truly shames most other obvious cash-ins from greedy labels. If you're new to this band, this is absolutely the perfect starting point in discovering some beautifully crafted music from a small but talented group of musicians who sadly disbanded after only just perfecting their art. Prophecy have done a marvellous job in retaining and hopefully extending Empyrium's legacy; hopefully more people will now be able to discover one of Germany's best kept musical secrets.'

'Empyrium is a band whose act just never got old. Although they only released 4 albums, two metal and two folk, they definitely left behind a big following of fans of their majestic and melodic music. Their debut album, A wintersunset, perfectly captures everything in the band's musical style. The music is not intended for headbanging, and it isn't fast, but it just delivers every other aspect overloaded with emotions.
I won't say too much about the production for this review, because this is the kind of music where the overall sound is most important. You don't need to listen to just one aspect of the sound, you can just sit back and appreciate all of it at once. But I will say that every instrument is very easy to hear, and certain instruments stand out during certain sections. Mostly, you hear the synths and guitars melding music and emotion better than any other instrument. Anyway, production doesn't matter much, because this is music that you can really feel. At times it's sad, at others it's beautifully uplifting.
The intro and outro of the album are perfect. Two songs that are either happy or sad depending on your mood. They're simple, but full of emotion, as a lot of Empyrium's music tends to be. The rest of the album perfectly balances you, using violin-esque synths and guitars to blend into a perfect melody together, with all of the other instruments underlining everything evenly. The vocals are really the only blemish here, although they are still far from being considered bad. There are two types of vocals. An operatic, melodic tone is used most often throughout, which again, is nice, but I think the singer is a little too over-dramatic with them, although that's only a minor flaw. The raspy vocals aren't used half as much, but they are decent. Fortunately, they don't overtake the music or wreck the emotions. I have heard better, but I've definitely heard worse.
Although this album isn't exactly done by a band who can play their instruments wickedly, the music is slow and calm, and it isn't needed. The music is straightforward, with single-note guitar solos and steady, even drumming, but I still really like the atmosphere and the musical composition too much for me to use that as a point against this album
All in all, I think this music is just great. Listening to any of the 7 songs helps me feel better about things gone wrong in my life, and I just feel so happy listening to the album. It leaves you with a really good feeling, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to expand a bit from the screaming and thrashing and just relax.
I recommend "Under Dreamskies," "The Franconian Woods in Winter's Silence", and "The Yearning".'

'First off, I must say that this is one of the most unique folk metal releases I have ever heard. As a matter of fact, I really don't associate Empyrium with folk metal at all, especially this release, Songs of Moors and Misty Fields. This album has a very strong melancholy gothic vibe to it. There are many folk instruments being used within the album, such as flutes, but overall, I get a very ye olde gothic atmosphere from this album. Everything within this album is incredible, and extremely enjoyable for those seeking dark, romantic folk metal.
The first thing a listener will notice about SoMaMF is the albums dark elegance. I must say, this is one of the most depressingly beautiful albums I have ever heard. A very sombre, romantic, and gothic atmosphere enshrouds this release. This mist of melancholy drapes itself over every song on this album, and perfectly immerses you in Empyrium's vision. As opposed to usual folk metal releases, which have bombastic use of folk instruments, SoMaMF has very subtle use of flutes, and other folk instruments. While listening to this album, I get a very dark medieval minstrel vibe, as opposed to the standard "battle metal" folk that is much more popular. Empyrium are able to flawlessly combine gothic, folk, doom, symphonic, and black metal influences into one extremely impressive and beautiful release. SoMaMF consists of only six songs, with four of them over eight minutes in length. Listening to this album in one sitting gives a profound effect. It is only then that you notice all of the details Empyrium put into the album. Every aspect of music becomes better each time you listen to it. Every instrument's sound has incredible quality and production, yet the album is by no means over produced. SoMaMF has an amazing natural feel to it, which is never lost within a song.
What makes this album one of the best, as well as deserving of a 100% score, is the beauty of the individual songs themselves. Each song is incredibly amazing, but the two that stand out the most to me are "The Ensemble of Silence", and "Lover's Grief". "The Ensemble of Silence" is by far the best track on the album, containing everything that is amazing about the album as a whole. The lyrics on this track are incredibly written, and entwine perfectly with the music. At times, the lyrics are spoken with merely a whisper, and at other times, powerful singing and BM-esque screaming is implemented. Intensity shifts multiple times throughout the song, which lends very well to its overall beauty. Acoustic and Electric guitar are also both implemented, with the former dominating the best parts of the song. Everything in this song exudes emotion, and evokes strong emotion from the listener. This song has made me brood within my candle-lit bedchamber many a time.
"Lover's Grief" is another absolutely amazing track on SoMaMF. This track is much more intense than the previous one I described. Intense probably isn't really the right word actually, but overall, "Lover's Grief" is more heavy and less acoustic than "The Ensemble of Silence". The track immediately starts off with a soft flute melody, that gradually becomes louder, and leads into the sorrowful whine of the guitars and the deep mournful voice of Markus Stock. This song follows closely behind "The Ensemble of Silence" in terms of melancholy atmosphere, but it shows much more use of standard metal conventions. For the most part, this song keeps its mid-tempo intensity throughout, giving way only during a piano interlude. Once again, the lyrics are incredible, and have the biggest aura of gothic romanticism found on SoMaMF, the title of the song itself is a big hint at this as well.
Overall, this album is amazing on all fronts; production, song structure, lyrics, atmosphere, and general flow. It evokes incredible emotions within me every time I listen to it. I would recommend this album for fans of gothic doom, gothic black, and dark folk/neo-folk. If you enjoy folk metal in the vein of Eluveitie or Turisas, this album is not for you. If you are looking for depressingly beautiful music, this album will satiate your need perfectly. People who are fans of Opeth's acoustic songs, Dead Can Dance, Dark Sanctuary, early My Dying Bride, Draconian, and Dornenreich will surely be entranced with the beauty of Empyrium's "Songs of Moors and Misty Fields".'

'Empyrium, along with Ulver, have ventured from metal to the dark acoustic scene. The only difference is that Ulver went back to metal (only to fuck it for electronica) and Empyrium spilt up with this sound as their final sound. "Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays" is the first of two acoustic efforts from the band. And though it is a success, it does have some problems.
First, we will discuss the pros of the album. Right off the bat, the tenor (high male singing) vocals are seriously beyond belief. Thomas Helm is the man behind the tenor vocals here. He has a sweet, angelic voice that are powerful, yet not overbearing. The vocals are very operatic, so some will be turned off. Very pretty sounding male vocals. Helm is certainly at the top of the vocals outlook in all of metal.
Another highlight is the guitar. The acoustic guitar dominates this album as its main focus. Fair to superb melodies are created here by Marcus Stock. I don't think his classical guitar skill matches to Haavard of Ulver's Kveldssanger, but he can really play.
The cons of the album are mostly vocal. Although Helm is seriously talented, co-vocalist Marcus Stock does not compare. Stock is the baritone (low male singing) on the album. He is fair at best. He lacks range, variety, emotion and passion. All the elements that Helm has conquered here. Stock is also way too obsessed with whispering. Come on, anyone can whisper, man! If there is one style of vocals that really crawls up my ass the wrong way, it's whispering. "The Shepard and the Maiden Ghost" is filled with lyrics and your thinking "Yes, Helm will get a chance to shine here," but the whole song is whispered. I would much rather have an instrumental than that.
Speaking of instrumentals, I do believe there are way too many on this album. I'm all for instrumental folk music, but when you have a singer like Helm it might be wise to use him. "Kveldssanger" by Ulver used the mighty Garm just enough; not too much, not too little. Helm is used way too little. I would not advocate every song, but a little more than three out of nine would be nice. I think five of nine would have been perfect.
The standouts on this release are the last two songs. "Many Moons Ago" sees Helm recite a story of a man who has seen the ghost of a girl. Very creepy stuff. "When Shadows Grow Longer" is a remake of a previous Empyrium song, but done much better. Helm and Stock are able to harmonize nicely here and the result is perfect. More songs like these two should have absorbed the album's beginning and middle.
Overall, this is a strong acoustic release. I think it could have been much better, but it does still kick balls. I have the album on CD, but you probably could get away with downloading the last two tracks to hear much of what the album has to offer.'

'It is a complete mystery to me as to why Empyrium, or particularly this album, is not reviewed more often on MA. Although, it might have something to do with the fact that they released their last real album in 2002 and disbanded soon after. The thought that many people probably missed out on the brilliance that is Empyrium saddens me. Empyrium has been one of my fallback bands ever since I learned about them in 2000, two years before the "Weiland" album was released. I was then confronted with the back-catalogue of Empyrium and it has kept me in its grasp ever since. Never before had I heard a band with such a distinct sound, a sound which changed with every album but always remained Empyrium at the heart. To me, Empyrium is a really special band, that is why I am really excited to hear they have reunited to record new material. But let us not get carried away just yet, this review is certainly not about the band as a whole, or whatever they may or may not produce in the future, it is about "Weiland".
"Weiland" is the last album that Empyrium released before disbanding, it is a convincingly acoustic album. Instruments which appear on the album, besides the obvious drums and bass guitar, are the acoustic guitar, piano, violin, cello, western concert flute and the bassoon. This makes for a very natural, smooth, slow-paced and easy-listening experience throughout most of the album. This might make you wonder, why is this album even on MA? Is it even metal? Well, for the most part it is not. The only real links this album still has with metal are the occasional black metal-inspired shrieks which emerge shortly on tracks like "Fortgang", "Waldpoesie" and "Die Schwäne im Schilf" to provide contrast with the otherwise very natural sound. Markus Stock furthermore is responsible for the general singing vocals and whispers on this album which are contrasted by some amazingly performed operatic vocals from band mate Helm, who also happens to be the main force behind the piano.
This album takes heavy cues from the neofolk genre in the sense that it manages to convey a lot of emotions with relatively few and modest use of instrumentation. In short we can say Empyrium continued their neofolk inspired sound which they started to develop on their previous album "Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays". Not a big surprise since the writing of "Weiland" followed just after the completion of that album. The lyrics on this album are all in German, which was a most likely a deliberate choice by Markus to better express himself. Contrary to what one might expect they are not distracting at all – in fact I find them very intriguing. My first language is closely related to German so it is quite easy for me to understand the lyrics and appreciate them.
The album manages to paint pictures in my mind's eye, it summons visions of nature landscapes, moorland, meadows, rivers, creeks, snow-covered pine forests and mountain peaks. This is exactly what Markus Stock intended, in the booklet of the Empyrium retrospective boxset Markus Stock explains that he has always associated certain instruments with natural phenomena. The sound of a piano, particularly in the higher registers he says, he associates with water. Flutes resemble the atmosphere of heath to him, while dark plucked guitars represent undergrowth. It is exactly this that helped him to shape this album. The album consists of three chapters, track 1 through 6 are Heidestimmung ("Moor Sounds"), track 7 is Waldpoesie ("Forest Poetry") and track 8 through 12 is Wassergeister ("Water Spirits"). Chapter one is characterized by the use of drums and acoustic guitar, chapter two is more of a mixture of all instruments found on this album except for the piano, whereas the final chapter is then fully taken over by the piano in combination with the violin and cello. Very impressive.
"Weiland", or Empyrium for that matter, is music that I can listen to at any time, be it winter or summer, day or night. Like I mentioned before it has been a band on which I can fall back at any time. The music never lets me down, it always has the same impact on me each time I listen to it. I do not know if this album will have the same impact on you, it relies heavily on personal taste. Seeing, however, that you are reading this review on a metal website there is a tiny chance that you may be interested in neofolk-inspired music, but if this review has peaked even a slight interest for you I strongly advise you to check this album out. Perhaps even start with their back-catalogue if you would rather hear their doom-inspired metal roots first. Closing this review I would like to take a look at the future, what can Empyrium possibly bring after this masterpiece? It seems impossible to come up with something better. I personally believe that Markus Stock would not have revived Empyrium unless he had a grand vision for a new album, so all we can do for now is wait impatiently for the next chapter in this book. I hope it will not disappoint.'

'After what seemed like ages of silence, one of metal's most unique bands have finally come out of the fog to present a thrilling live celebration of their legacy. It's understandable that some of you might not be aware of Empyrium at all, and I found them on a whim just a few years back. As for this performance, it's of an amazingly high quality that sounds about as clear as a studio performance would, showcasing some of the band's most well-known tracks with an unparalleled clarity. "The Days Before The Fall" begins with light, almost tribal folk music set to the tune of beautiful clean vocals. But guitars also make an appearance in the track as well, as Empyrium is still a metal band in some aspects. "The Franconian Woods In Winter's Silence" continues with this same approach, yet definitely revs the band's sound into high gear near the end of the track. But it's this mix of brooding folk and death metal that has made the band something of a rare gem, although you won't really hear a great deal of the death metal influenced tracks on this recording. Next begins "At Night Where The Wood Grouse Plays" from the record of the same name, which made a perfect night time mix and seems to elicit the same feeling here. Once again, there's something truly uncanny about these gentlemen, and hearing these classics in a live presentation with cutting-edge technology is remarkable. "Heimwaerts" then begins with a howling wind, whilst whispers decorate the track and work to create an amazing mood. Though the song isn't in my native language, it certainly brings forth something that I can feel, a thing that very few bands are capable of these days. The funeral elements of this band come into place with "Mourners," which brings back a slew of great guitar melodies and thick vocal rasps that come off with extreme brilliance. The disc gives this song the longest amount of time, and it is well deserved as the folk instruments and guitars work together to create an otherworldly vision of sorrow. It's fantastically bleak.
I won't spoil the entire release for you, but I will tell you that the band continue their approach of morose yet appealing folk music throughout the whole of the album, with the addition of guitars and metallic elements when necessary. But while most of the band's heavier material has been laid absent, there is no doubting that the material which has been graciously recorded on this live disc, is worth listening to. It's a monument as a matter of fact, a somewhat epic monument of sorrow, grief and misery, beautifully remastered through the art of live performance. The only way that this release could be any better is if I could've traveled back in time to see it for myself. 'Remember ladies, nothing sets the mood for the night quite like Empyrium.'

'Empyrium… my beloved Empyrium… our beloved Empyrium. They had been but a bygone phase of excellence, their presence committed to memory and their creations perfectly committed to tape. Four vital albums, each having taken a different approach – from the sombre doom metal of A Wintersunset… and Songs of Moors and Misty Fields through to the stripped-down neoclassicism of Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays, all the way to that which was a grand, climactic, Wagnerian culmination of their previous endeavours: Weiland. Empyrium had marked out an exemplary career, and although I was sad to see it end, the journey felt complete.
Then, in 2010, Prophecy Productions announced the rebirth of Empyrium. That same year, we were treated to a new song on the compilation Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings, which was–in my opinion–one of Empyrium's most rousing works. Now, nearly four years later, and twelve years after the magnificent Weiland, the new full-length album is ready to digest. Empyrium have always been an honest and instinctual act, and as such, I shall attempt to give their comeback album an honest and instinctual appraisal.
Prophecy Productions are one of those remarkable labels who never fail to put great effort into the packaging of each new release. As such, the first impressions of the records they release are–like it or not–visual and tangible. Before I can even discover the disc to place into the player, I'm forced to appreciate the vessel in which it lives; in my case, a white, large format digibook which tastefully presents the lyrics for each song, preceded by a commentary by the band and some beautiful nature photograph–a subtle reminder that Empyrium have always venerated the natural world, visually and thematically.
A friend of mine, who I used to work with, would often play the popular indie rock band Editors on the office stereo. I grew to dislike their vocal stylings (though in truth, anything played with too much regularity would have invoked the same reaction in me), so upon reaching a developmental point in the The Turn of the Tides' opening song "Saviour", I was discomforted to hear that very same baritone vocal style harnessed expertly by Andreas Bach. The aversion felt was instinctive and fleeting, and as soon as I returned to my thirty-year-old mind, the significance of this new dimension to Empyrium became clear and positive. Empyrium's artistic integrity will never come under question as far as I'm concerned. They are true creators; carvers of their own path, and they always have been. Indeed, the very existence of this album–the first in twelve years–is due only to the pure motivations of a defunct musical act who discovered that they still had something to say.
Track three, "In the Gutter of this Spring", further demonstrates this subtle post-punk / indie rock element, complete with drumming highly suited to the genre. The same imposing thread is woven boldly through to the penultimate song of the album, "With the Current into Grey". There is nothing to fear from unfamiliar or (subjectively) problematic musical genres–this is something many of us come to realise with maturity. What matters is the intention and execution in the use of those unexpected influences. It goes without saying that here, Empyrium execute every last note of their fifth album masterfully. The band also explain in their liner notes, wherever applicable, that they are aware of songs or parts being of a "different approach" from the trademark sound of earlier Empyrium. The fact that they pressed ahead with these ideas regardless is testament to their artistic sincerity and instinct.
My focus on what's different about The Turn of the Tides is intended to serve the Empyrium fan with an impression of this album which will be of most interest to them, for in all other ways this work is precisely what would, and should, have been expected from this very special act. I'm not even going to express relief or praise for the fact that much of this album is typical Empyrium, because I cannot conceive of Schwadorf and Bach producing anything less. Theirs is a legacy of reliability. The seven songs are laced through with trademark Empyrium ingredients from all stages of their original career: sweeping strings, naked piano notes conjuring moods of loneliness (and water, if I remember Schwadorf's remarks in an old Empyrium interview correctly), sudden electric guitars and brief outbursts of rasped vocals, all held together by consistent acoustic and clean guitar tones, moving lead vocals and drums of a moderate tempo. The title track of the album closes proceedings and projects a brooding, ethereal atmosphere. It is so relaxing that one could almost forget the more uplifting songs have already passed.
Thematically, Empyrium once again deal with nature, and more specifically, the cycles of death and rebirth–there, at once, being something so hopeful and bleak wherever we happen to be in that cycle of our lives. Even in their darkest moments, the German act has managed to express bliss, and in their lighter moments have never completely freed their music of sorrow. This dichotomy, for me, defines this latest album and makes its scope and playability that much wider.
Weiland was sonically a masterclass in concept–from the very first time I listened to it, I knew it represented a journey with so many dynamics that I remain in awe of its compositional values–a myriad of ideas seamlessly flowing, very much comparable to the experience of an opera. I don't quite get the same impression from The Turn of the Tides, which feels decidedly like a collection of separate songs than a flowing story. I have no doubt that this is due to no failure on Schwadorf and Bach's part, but for me it makes this album a little less awesome than Weiland. The audio production, performances and attention to detail here are perhaps Empyrium's best, however, and the beauty of each song is undeniable; it is what I expected, and that means Empyrium are victims of their own excellence. They may never be able to surpass expectation.
I promised an instinctual review, and so I have no doubt my relationship with this album will change with each new listen. It will be one of my very favourite releases of the year–a must for all Empyrium fans. For anyone reading this who is not familiar with the band, this album is merely average by Empyrium standards, which of course means it is uncommonly superb by anyone else's.'
