Total: 56:24'At first I thought that "l'inverno" means "hell", but after checking it in Google Translator it turned out that this word stands for "winter" in Italian. "The Winter and the Kite". Isn't it a cute title? As if taken from a fairy tale. But this is Albireon, the band inscribed so strongly within the neofolk genre, but also standing out because of their different attitude towards concepts and atmospheres. No runes or dealing with big history, world wars and other things like that. This is a personal project, even though it's a band. "L'Inverno e l'Aquilone" was recorded by three fellows; for me it's the intimate output of the band's leader, Davide Borghi, who deals with his angels and demons. As if he's not really interested in the world outside, and tries to focus on his own little moments of tragedy and happiness. Also, it's always filled with a child's delicacy. The fragility of a child's body and mind was always Davide's point of interest, for which he found vent in the strongest manner on the album of his sideproject Ekra.
I liked the album after the first listen, at least the first six songs. Nice catchy melodies, a charming atmosphere and an honesty that I felt throughout my whole body in each and every second of this album. But something was missing. Perhaps I was looking at this album through the lens of the previous albums, which remained deeply rooted in my memory, and as the old Polish comedy says, we all like the most the melodies that we've already heard. But then "Kezia" came and I shivered for the first time. Apparently nothing new under the sun: acoustic guitar, voice and a simple keyboard melody. But what a mood they managed to create, intensified by strange noises in the background and distorted, desperate screams in the second half of the song. Suddenly I realized how much Albireon has in common with Sonne Hagal, which I know the guys like very much. Yet the German project seems more down-to-earth and isn't as light and ephemeral as the Italian project.
After "Kezia" we have "The Stolen Child" with lyrics by W. B. Yeats. In this song they present more experimental approach; it's also the only song enriched by female vocals by Maria Cristina Anzola, known from The Blue Project, the other side project by Davide. The feeling of awe stayed with me until the end of the CD, the innocent and peaceful of "Park Of Silent Angels". the hypnotizing and epic "The Black Harbour", which at moments reminds me of the magic atmosphere generated by The Joy Of Nature. "Beslan 2004" recalling the tragic events that happened in a school in this Russian town twelve years ago. After a while I also learned to appreciate the first six songs, which are more "classic", so to speak, but nicely arranged and performed. And I have the impression that Davide became a better singer, at least from a technical point of view – because when it comes to transferring emotions he's one of the best within the genre. As is Albireon in general, that made it again. Silently and modestly, with no need for big words, they managed to bring some tears into my eyes.'

Total: 67:24'A very particular memory from my early years is my time spent in the natural surroundings of my grandparents' tiny (and since long gone) village residence nestled between two Eastern bloc countries. The memories of playing in fields, exploring forests, and communing freely with the endless expanses of sky and earth are so visceral they are almost pre-verbal and are as clear in my mind now as they were when I experienced them as a small child. Those lucky enough to have experienced even a glimpse of rural life will understand the mysterious feeling of communion and tranquility it engenders in the soul which can barely be described in words. As rural and country life becomes more and more remote to most of us, its nostalgic pull becomes stronger and stronger. There is a reason this experience is so fetishized in certain subsets of music, especially all sorts of modern folk and its adjacent genres; it symbolizes not only our desire for a fleeting connection to ways of life past, but something even more ineffable: a simplicity of existence and unity with one's surroundings that seem all but out of reach in our current world. Out of reach just far enough to induce a dull, aching nostalgia, but close enough to live on as a powerful archetype.
Beginning right with its title, even the exterior of Am Feld does a lot to set that nostalgic pastoral mood: idyllic, sepia-toned vintage photos of blonde women and children playing in open fields. The inside features more of the same—faded, aged photographs of someone's smiling ancestors enjoying nature mixed with modern but still wistful images. The nostalgia of childhood seems like it might be a subtle under-theme of the record (abandoned houses, an empty swing, etc.).
Stein is headed by Norbert Strahl, who has been creating dark folk for over a decade, formerly as frontman of Seelenthron and member of Dies Natalis, who are established formations in their own right. A very interesting detail I encountered while researching the band (unless my intermediate German misleads me) is that the project was initially created to set Strahl's great-grandfathers' poems to music, which certainly lends a great deal of depth to the project as well as the general theme of deep nostalgia that seems to envelop it.
The album opens on a calm and folksy note with a woman (Julia Wilke) gently sing-whispering. A male voice later intertwines with hers harmoniously to the accompaniment of a sad acoustic guitar, the woman's voice rising and falling as if she is telling you a folktale. I have a fondness for male/female duets where the voices echo and complement each other; it creates a feeling of some primordial harmony that is beyond soothing and natural. Especially in this folkish arrangement, the woman's soft near-whisper and the man's firm voice blend together to create something powerful.
The acoustic guitar is the obvious backbone of the record, with other sparse musical elements strung onto it like beads on a necklace. I rather enjoy well-executed, acoustic guitar-centered music. Although some might find it monotonous, I think that not only is it very possible to achieve variety within the medium, but the level of similarity that does exist gives it a positive quality, tapping into some pan-European musical archetype. The tracks themselves subscribe to much the same format, so yes, the album is rather homogenous. This could be a negative in another case, but I do not believe it to be one here. It renders the whole album one long meditation—very easy to get lost in and drift away to.
The music has a distinct sadness, but its melancholy is very clear and nostalgic rather than hopeless and nihilistic. The sadness is not the drama of downfalls and catastrophes, but languid existential nostalgia with a hint of traditionalism. At times, the album almost dips into dramaticism, like on "Weltenwandel," which comes close to sounding like an overwrought take on a Middle-Ages ballad (the samples and bits of lyrics lead me to believe that it actually might be some sort of crusader's ballad … unless I'm wrong, but burning witches seems to be involved). In fact, Strahl's voice on most tracks calls to mind knights and crusaders—I'm not sure why, but I involuntarily see the main character of The Seventh Seal in my head upon hearing his voice.
I remember (and you probably do too) a time not long ago when there was suddenly a burst in popularity for German bands blending hard rock with leather kilts and bagpipes and the whole "Medieval" schtick (Tanzwut, Corvus Corax, etc.). Am Feld, at times, comes close to those Ren-Faire levels of immersive, but stays on just the right side. It manages to take the aspects of that bizarre trend which were pleasing sonically (namely an ineffable air of antiquity) without venturing into the downright silly and circus-like, for which I commend them.
The one and only track I did not thoroughly enjoy is "Das Eine," which is pleasant and harmoniously sad until a second voice joins the lead vocalist. It's somewhat hard to tell whether it is a man or woman harmonizing with him, but I'm leaning towards man putting on a silly voice. I'm not sure what effect was intended, but the result was a feeling of confusion and mild unease.
The vocals of the album deserve their own aside; together with the acoustic guitar, a strong beautiful male voice is another pillar on which the entire album rests. Here it is deep, loud, sometimes sad and gentle, and sometimes firm and commanding. Yet, it is always formal and dramatic, as if you were listening to an authentic Minnesänger. I'll confess that I have a weakness for male vocals, especially stern solemn ones, and the only thing I like better than a well-executed male/female duet is a well-executed male/male duet like on "Blume auf dem Felsenschorf." The quality of the vocal delivery is an immense part of the album's charm.
Am Feld is beautiful: immersive, tranquil, cohesive… It is almost painfully good at evoking nostalgia—the gnawing nostalgia of things lost somewhere irretrievably in the past, things you long for without understanding them. If there is anything negative to say about the album, it is that there is unfortunately not a lot to make Am Feld particularly stand out in memory. As mentioned above, the relatively similar construction of the songs, while giving the album a soothing hypnotic flow, also unfortunately makes them hard to differentiate or remember in retrospect, especially when surrounded by the numerous other bands employing the same acoustic-heavy format. I've listened to the album several times already, and I definitely would (and chances are, will) listen to it time and time again, but I cannot say that it has stuck in my memory. The music is gripping and beautiful while it lasts but fleeting once it is over. In this way, one of its strengths—its immersive, homogenous flow—also ends up being a small weakness.'
